4-25 Scores

Wow, thats a pretty comprehensive piece on dyeing discs Erin- Deserves some serious consideration-
Meanwhile- here are the scores from last week-
Roy 8
Greg 1
Vince 1
Jim -7
Jeremy 0
Matthew 1
Ryan -1
Nate 2
rusty 7
Johnny Q 3
UTM -2
AJ -7
Davey -6

AJ wins the tourney in a Boat Race- 2 weeks in a row.
Jim ace's hole 4, gets alot of $.
5 way tie for second place, playoff goes to Jim.

I am going to be out of town this weekend- could someone update the handis and bring them Sunday?

BTW- we had several votes of the 13 of us before the round- 4:00 beat 5:00 and 4:30. Its is hard to exclude anyone but with the amount of people who are in our club it seems impossible to find a time good for everyone. It seems for the majority of the people, earlier is better- 4:00 is pushing it already for many.

Showdown at the KOA Corral!

Speaking of getting everyone psyched for Willits--which I will not be able to attend this year, due to the impending addition to our family--there was a duel OK-Corral-KOA style on Friday which just begs for story-telling!

Davey, myself, Arvin and Jakey met up in Willits on Friday, a beautiful early afternoon of sun and strong wind. When we started out, I thought we had agreed to throw all the bag tags in the middle, but I discovered at the end that only Davey thought he was playing for his tag. So Dave and I went mano-a-mano, and it was a match for the ages! I didn't follow AJ and Jake's scores too well, but I can recount the duel of D vs J (for those of you not interested in boring hole-by-hole descriptions, please skip ahead):

We both birdied one and parred two and three. Warming up. On four, my drive looked good, and Dave's back must be all better, bc he drove it farther up that hill than I've ever seen him do. It might have been an ace run, but hit the right target tree, and rolled down the hill. My drive ended up pretty parked, so I birdied, he parred. He birdied 5, I parred. We both birdied 6, the pond hole (mine was about three feet away...!), and parred the uphill 7. I birdied 8 and parred 9, while Davey parred 8 and bogied 9 (first shot into the bush on the right), leaving me with a 2-shot lead after 9 at 4 under to 2 under.

The back nine was crazy. We both birdied a left-pin 10, me with an anhyzer, Davey with a flick. On 11, back left pin, I had what looked to be a perfect throw, while Dave hit the forward tree on the right, well short. Then one of the turning points of the match. Davey had a downhill putt of about 60 feet, and damn if he didn't sink it! My great throw must have rolled out, and I parred. One shot lead. We both par 12, and I miss a makable birdie putt on 13, we both par. And then came hole 14. Sharply sidehill hole through trees, with the big right-to-left wind. Davey takes out his Banshee, and I think "Mistake. That thing will skip, and with the wind and the dirt landing up there, it will be way down the hill in the blink of an eye." He throws it, and immediately says "Oh no." I watch it coming right to left quickly and think "Yup, just as I thought", and then it disappears from view, going toward the basket very fast, and then we hear: CHAINS!! AJ and Jake were both spotting, and immediately start jumping up and down! ACE FOR DAVEY ON 14!!! And as I'm jumping on him and pushing him around, I am also thinking, "No way. No F-ing way. I've got to convert to Judaism. It's got to be the religion. The guy has karma like no other." I've chained out of ace-runs going half the speed that throw had. And if it doesn't hit the basket, he's lucky to find it again (think of the color of that disc), much less make par. Instead, he takes a one-shot lead. I par.

We both par a very windy 15. On 16, Davey throws a standard power Destroyer shot right at it, and leaves himself a 15-footer for bird. Damnit. I take my beat-up Starfire and play a shot I've come to like on windy days on this hole--throw it well left of the basket with a pretty strong anhyzer, and let the wind work for you. The pepto-colored disc rides the wind like it was a trained stallion, comes right in at the basket, the stability puts on the brakes, and the thing BARELY misses the ace! It ends up two feet beyond the hole, on the opposite side! I'm telling you, I think Judaism would have dropped that disc right in. We both birdie the hole. Hole 17, Davey hits the big tree trunk on the right, I hit a high branch even shorter than that. My upshot isn't great, leaving me an uphill twenty-five footer for par. Davey's upshot is better, leaving him about 15 feet beyond the hole. I sink the putt! Davey, visibly rattled (ok, maybe only in my mind), misses the par putt, leaving us all square going to 18! I take out my Comet, and send it out. The wind doesn't give it quite enough help, but it leaves me a chance for birdie, settling at the base of the final mound. Dave's driver shot was a bit outside of me. He parks the second shot to assure his par, forcing me to birdie to take his #2 tag. I line up the putt. Very tough. Twenty-five feet or so, straight uphill, with a strong tailwind. Very tough to get this high enough. I pick my target well above the basket, and let it fly. It takes a piece of the top of the basket, and flutters harmlessly to the ground. The bag tag challenge ends in a tie. And as we all know, tie goes to the runner (or current owner). We played a playoff hole to settle the group's money issue, and Davey had a crazy skip on a very windy hole 1 to park that as well. It was clear, Davey had sold his soul to the Devil, or to Yahweh.

The final tally? I think AJ came out ahead of Jakey a bit, and after a solid even par on the front, posted a 4 over on the windy back side. But since I wasn't clear enough about calling him out, he held on to his #3 tag. Jim shoots a bogie-free 6 under, without any lucky breaks or bounces. One of the most controlled rounds of my life. Davey also shoots a 6 under, with two bogies, a crazy 60-foot putt he was probably just trying to park, and an ace which could just as easily have been a double-bogie or resulted in the loss of his beloved Banshee for all time. Somehow he still clings desperately to that #2 tag.

And I'm not bitter. No really. Seriously.

1. Arvin to the J and 2. It's good to be back!

Sunday the 18th day of April of the year 2010 saw 8 flimsy, fun, frolfers take aim at victory. This day also saw the return of yours truly, Davey D, take the mic stand once again recovering nicely from my bulging disc (disc as in back not disc as in a Destroyer). There was quite a few challenges and competitions on this day. Besides the tourney there was a 5 way bag tag challenge with moi, Parksy, Helldride, Hemulous, and the Arvin. On to tourney...the group that I was in was me, Jimmy, HemHaw, and Parksy (with Blake joining in). The other group was Mr. Epic, G Money, Arvin, and Vinchenzo. I must say that in our group it was very competitive and we all made good shots and we all missed some easy ones. After 9 me, Jimmy, and Parks were 5 under and Hemulous was 6 under. The ending scores were me and HemHaw 9 under, Parks 7 under, and Helldridge 6 under. I think the highlights for me were my birdie putt on 16, HemHaw and Jimmy's birdies on 14, the way Parksy has been playing over the past month, and everyone going through the uprights on hole 18 with 3 birdys and 1 par. The number 1 tag was still in contention and after I split the uprights on "Top o the World" and HemHaw missing it many thought this chapter was concluded but Hems found a way to par out and I found a way to miss my long putt. I guess it was destiny for the Hems to get the NUMBER 1 tag back because he hit his putt on hole 8 and I hit the basket and missed...oh well, at least I have 2. CONGRATS to Arvin who shot 8 under and 7 under his handicap just squeking by Parks who shot 6 under his handi. Once again, it was good to be back playing again. Here are the scores that I remember...can someone post the rest of the scores?

Edit by Matthew:

Here's more scores- i don't have the scorecard with Blake's score on it anyone have it?

The Feather River Open, My Back, and Our Logo!

Friends,

So, 3 weeks have gone by since the Feather River Open and I still have dreams of my hole in one, Jody's 1st place victory, Hemmings -7 under round, Dirka and Brody going head to head and tying for 15th place (earning plastic), our semi-debaucherous road trip to Chico and The Sierra Nevada Brewing Company, the sun, the wind, the intensity of 4 rounds and a doubles round, the disc golf course along the feather river, the skateboarding dog, and Oroville. I think that says it all except the fact after my third round (bogey free -5 under round...I was in 5th place after the round) I tweaked my back (lower back disc nerve stuff).

All and all it was a fun time/tournament. I must say that it was an intense weekend of discgolf...2 rounds on Saturday and 2 rounds on Sunday in the elements. I haven't played in 3 weeks and I am jonsing...I met with the Physical Therapist on Friday and I have a stretching routine that I have been following. My back feels much better and I am going to get out there soon. Erin, Brodys, and Dirka--add your take on the Feather River Open.

So, when and how are we going to put our logo on discs? What is the action plan? As far as discs I think we should put our logo on a Firebird, Destroyer, something flippy/understable, and an aviar putter? I know we voted on this on the blog but for some reason I don't think the votes are accurate...maybe we should have anohter vote?? I was thinking that we could sell some of these discs at Willits...just a thought.

I still haven't given the high school artists any money...I think we decided that we were going to give the artist who did the Happy Headband $25...what do people think? NateDizzleDog, do you still have the art entries from the high school floating around the lumber yard somewhere?

I hope everyone is doing well.

UTM Prevails!

In a rough and tumble round which somehow managed to take 3 solid hours to complete, the one and only Uncle Travelin' Matt came out on top, with a score of 1 under his handi! Great work Unc! Three went to the top o' th' world to prove their worthiness to possess the second place prize at even par after handi: Bread of Rye (nice to have Daddy Ryan back in the fold!), Nate Dizzle, whose handicap was unclear but who went up nonetheless, and yours truly. I got off a worthy effort and split the uprights for a birdie and the prize. It was a fine afternoon, good company all around, and all was right with the world.

Oh, and the #1 tag was pried out of Erin's death grip for the first time ever. ;-)

And the scores...

Greg +4
Jeremy +6
Ryan -1
Matthew +2
Nate +6
Lindz +7
UTM -1
Jim -6

Parkahontas takes the pot

Yes, that's right. With strong south winds picking up throughout the evening, Matthew "I-Don't-Actually-Know-Matthew's-Real-Last-Name" kept his nose to the grindstone and pulled out a stellar -7, 7 under his handicap. Right on. In the same group, Jim impressed us all, following up last week's win with this week's second place (though he did have to fight Vince for it from the top of the world). It was a great tourney 12 frolfers strong, and it would be great if someone posted scores, and updated handis.

And how about a recap of the Feather River Open? Highs? Lows? Mediums? I know there are highlights guys...

And the scores were-

Lindsey +9
Jeremy +3
Matthew -7
Jim -8
Rusty +10
Roy +4
AJ -2
Vince -1
Josh +10
Blake +6
Johnny Q +1
Matt (Travelling) +1

Cheers!

MFC Bag Tags!

So, who knows the official standings for the bag tags? If you look to your right you will see an almost complete list but I don't see Jake "the Snake" Smotherman or Jeremy "Epic" Center. Also, didn't Nate Dizzle lose his placement and then regain it from Mr. Epic?

Other matters: 1. Welcome back Jimmy and nice shooting on Sunday (-10) and nice win, 2. New Chick Record for the Linzanator shooting even and nice second place finish from Top of the World, 3. I think tournament is at 5pm on Sunday, and finally 4. Wish the MFC representatives (moi, HemHaw, Dirka, Brodys, and UTM) luck when we go represent in Oroville this weekend for the Feather River Open. Hopefully, we will bring back some money and plastic (and maybe some Steelhead) to the COAST!

P.S. I went to MCTV today and bought a copy of the video footage from the Fort Bragg Ice Bowl...Hemulus, can you help me upload this on the blog?

Can someone post the scores from last tourney on line?

15 UNDER!

Hemulous shot 15 down, the rest of us sucked, and thats all that needs to be said. No, really though, a BIG congrats to HemHaw (again) for breaking? tying? the course record on a windy day. Also, a big thank you to Hemmings for organizing the "Put the Baskets Back in their Rightful Place" Day and thanks to all that came out and helped with puting the baskets in. It was a good turnout with 12 frolfers frolfing it up. Erin killed it and Roy and Baltimore B tied for second which sent them to the "Top of the World" shot which Roy won and took second place. It is worth noting that there were some bag tag challenges and placement switches. Matthew Parkahontas graciously lost his 4 tag to none other than yours truly and Baltimore B, Nate Dizzle, and someone else had a challenge. So, have we decided what time to have our tournaments for the month that the little league is on the field. 5pm won the vote but it seemed like some 5pm voters changed their tune a bit. I personally say 2pm. Anyone else in favor? Featherweather, can you post the scores? Lets gear up for Oroville.

CALLING ALL HANDS!!

Soooo, in case you didn't know, our course was vandalized saturday night. Baskets 8-9 were pulled up concrete and all, and #10 was hacksawed clean off. In addition, the tee signs for 9 & 10 were stolen. Luckily the thieves were kinda dumb and dumped the baskets into Big River......at high tide. Low tide came to reveal the baskets the next morning, but not the tee signs which must have floated out to sea.

The plan is to reinstall the three baskets next Sunday Pre-tournament. I will be there @ 12:00 noon to start work. I invite any and all who can lend a hand.

Things we need:

A metal wheelbarrow for mixing concrete, or 2?
Post hole digger
Shovels
pick
Pieces of rebar
(2) 5 gallon buckets
hand trowel
other?

Things I will bring:
A digging bar
Concrete, 5 bags
1 shovel

im buyin a lotto ticket

so im watching the memorial, the first big event of the season on the internet. it was a live broadcast. i signed up for it in advance and paid ten bucks to register. during there first day coverage of the "super group" climo, locastro, jenkins and ulibari, they were drawing names for prize packages, they had been doing this several times during the event and i thought it was for participants of the tourney. Then, the announcer looks at the paper and says we have another winner from california...Derrick Robbings you have won a disc golf world prise pack.. then about five minutes later he again brings up my name and says its similar to derrick robbins hall of fame disc golfer, so as soon as i clean myself up, and put on some fresh drawers im heading to go buy some lotto tix, and if i win ill say it here/now all bag tag holders get a piece

Damn Aerobies!

MFC Represents!

It was a rainy day on Saturday the 27th day of February where 4 brave souls ventured off the island towards inland Mendocino County. Those 4 people were none other than moi daveythedentalhygieniststein, UTM (Uncle Travelin' Matt), Erin HemHaw Hemulous Hemulie, and the Ice Bowl Master Dirka the Dekendra. The Ukiah Ice Bowl was the draw and we saw and we played with little flaw and came and kicked some ass. We were all able to play in one group with a cool Ukiah local named Scott. Other coasters showed up as well including: Jeremy Epic Thumber Center, Greg the G Man, Dennis, Johnny, and Josh. Highlights: 1. UTM tied for 6th place in his division and took home some plastic, 2. I tied for second (shooting -2) and lost the playoff, taking third place in the Advanced division and I took home some plastic, 3. Dirka (after thinking he registered for the advanced division) won the Intermediate division (shooting -1) taking home a shit ton of plastic, 4. Erin, after a rough start, somehow managed to hit putts actually going through trees and several 50 footers and won are card (shooting -4), 4. Jeremey aced hole 15.

After Ukiah we (moi, UTM, Dirka, and HemHaw) went to Willits and played a bag tag challenge and Hemulie held onto number 1 shooting a riduculous -11. Dirka took down the number 2 (moi) shooting an impressive -4...I ended shooting -3...I am forgeting what UTM shot.

Onto the Mendo Weekly...I won it, shooting -10 (5 under hc) and Hemulie came in second shooting -10 (4 under his hc). Vince, Baltimore B, and someone else tied for 3rd shooting 3 under hc. Whiskeyweather, can you post the scores? Thanks y'all...Willits here we come...

3 Strokes, Instant Karma, and other matters of importance.

Hello Frolfland! This was the weekend of 3 strokes. I lost to Erin HemHaw Hemulous Hemmings at the Ice Bowl by 3 strokes...he shot -17 and I shot -14 (over 27 holes). On Sunday, once again, I lost to Hemulie by 3 strokes...he shot -9 and I shot -6. Well, back to the drawing board.

In other news the First Annual Fort Bragg Ice Bowl was a hugh success. Three times again, a big Thank You to Dirka for making this happen. It seemed like everyone had a good time and it felt like a coming together of Mendocinoites (Albion and Elk including) and Fort Braggarts. It also saw the first tournament maybe even the first round of Oscar River's old man (Rye Bready Bread) who stepped out of the Spirit World for a few hours to grace us with his presence.

In other news it would appear as if Karma sometimes works instantly (someone should write a song about this). It appeared as if Karma took hold of a Speed Demon (brought to you by Gateway Discs) and guided it through the mini gap on hole 11 and directed it into the chains and the basket for a hole in 1. Thats right Derrick Dirka Dekendra hit an ace on hole 11 claiming a recently capped $250. Thats what a guy gets for putting on a fundraising disc golf tournament.

All and all it was a helluva weekend.

P.S. Heemulie, can you post the scores from Sunday? Thanks!

R.I.P. Cary

For those of you who haven't heard, Dylan's father and our friend Cary passed away on Monday.  I was told this by Jeremy and Greg at the Fort Bragg course yesterday, and I was stunned.  Davey, Brian Storms and I spent part of our Sunday night, the night before he died, teaching him how to play Liar's dice at Patterson's.  He loved it.  I don't have any information about his cause of death, other than overhearing him talk at the course on Sunday about how he had had brain tumors in the past.  What a kind and nice man.  I know he had rallied to collect a huge number of gifts for the Ice Bowl, and more than a few people at the course suggested we dedicate the Ice Bowl to him.  I think it's a fine idea.  I also think we should pass around a hat at the I.B. to collect some money to help with his funeral costs.  What a sad thing.  Rest in Peace, Cary.

Taking the Long Way Home

Back in the darkest, deepest corner of the national library, an account of the great frolfer Hans Von Leiderstraten was recovered. In it are stories of the now infamous "Three Day Playoff". Where Hans and arch rival Ted "The Neutralizer" Davies were tied after 18 holes of regulation frolf and proceeded to play an unprecedented three whole days of sudden death frolf. Without the modern conveniences of cell phones, a runner had to be used to order pizzas, breakfast sandwiches (bacon, egg and cheese), lemonade and of course ice cream. A detailed description of Hans' "Special Sock" was full of life and vigor. I did not know that Hans' great uncle had worn the sock during the first World War and it had been repaired by Grandma Leiderstraten over one-hundred times. It is no wonder Hans used it to wipe the dew off of his drivers during early morning rounds.
Having read these accounts (I will only share more of the legendary stories if there is a request for them) I should not be the only one who sees the resemblance to the MFC's own Erin Hemmings. First of all both of their given names have only four letters in them. You are probably furrowing your brow and saying "but Ryan, you too only have four letters in your given name". A keen observer you are and I say Jodi too has only four letters in that first of all names. It appears there are more champions in our club than first suspected. However, none of us have placed a shot from the tee for #17 right below the basket for a drop in birdie. A feat only accomplished by Hans before the advent of Erin. I believe Hans and Erin share the same like of Pizza, the italian dish of a bread-like pie crust filled with tomato sauce, cheese and anything else left in ice box. Both men have been known to eat this treat from time to time. If you are having your doubts about the connection between these two great frolfers look no further than the article written about Erin and passed around in photo-stat form by Johnny Quest. The picture holds Erin in a smiling portrait pose. It appears that Erin had just finished 9th period in his junior year of high school. At one point Hans Von Leiderstraten too went to high school and he too had at one point had his picture taken right after 9th period during his junior year. Amazingly Hans did not look like a fresh faced long distance frisbee throw record holder but rather like an old man. Hans spent his entire life with long legs and arms and a very short torso giving him the "Old Man in the Mountain" look (Count Basie for the Jazz fans out there). When he grew his beard at age 15, the white hairs grew as far as the ground and held up right there. Amazing.

Lucky Number 12!

Roger Staubach, Terry Bradshaw, Joe Nameth, and Randall Cunningham all wore number 12...the same number I shot under on Sunday. Maybe I did it for little Fro Montana aka Oscar the grouch aka River Bed aka Lil Bread aka Oscar River Magee who may someday play quarterback for the Detroit Lions and wear lucky number 12. Maybe River will bring a Golden Super Bowl Victory to the city of Detroit in the great year of 2032. Only time will tell. Well, we had a fun round on Sunday with 11 determined frolfers. News Update: prior to the round we voted and decided to cap the ace pot at $250. It would seem appropriate that someone would ace after we decided to cap it but this did not happen but I did birdie hole number 17 on a Banshee second shot hyzer threw the trees with no chains (Baltimore B was the only person to witness it go in the basket). "It's in" he says "It stayed in" he repeats. Davey the dentist Stein threw up his arms in near victory only to go on and birdie hole 18. Wow, what a round! News Update Number 2: we are trying to hold a meeting sometime this week (depending on Dirka's schedule) before the Ice Bowl to tie up any loose ends. Dirka, what day and time works for you? Greg won a generously donated bottle of wine from Jimmerson on a CTP on hole 7. Erin Hemulous took second shooting -11 (4 under his hc). I am forgetting the rest of the scores but it goes something like this:

Davey D: -12 (-7 under hc)
HemHaw: -11 (-4 under hc)
Smelldridge: -7 (-3 under hc)
Tanweather: -4 (-4 or -3 under hc)
I can't remeber the rest...Tanweather, can you post the scores?

So you thought that the course record was safe. -15 seems like a decent score. Some of you are content with your bag tags and feel as if they are safe and sound in your possession. You are all sadly mistaken. It may take 20 years, it may take a life time but Oscar River Magee is and will always be my little champion. Aloha, pau.

All-Stars

Happy Sunny Tuesday, people!

On this inspiring sun-washed morning, I'd just like to point out something I've noticed as this wild MFC experiment has continued to tumble forward:

Something sort of odd has been unfolding.  Every one of us is contributing a lot to making this thing go.  A partial list of peeps and accomplishments:

Erin built the course, designed the B course, started the blog, got his talented art-designer Mom to design us a killer logo, schools us all on how to play, and constantly boggles us with that arm.

Matthew had the initial idea of the MFC and spearheaded the whole gig, is our unofficial president, handles the handicapping, and loves to say Eeeleven.

Ryan has hosted numerous tourneys at his old property, and holds the holy grail of the tournament three-peat, the ethereal goal which recedes before the rest of us like Mendo fog in October.

Davey is the ace-pot czar, the first-ever tourney ace-maker, and unofficial MFC cheerleader during tourneys.

I got the bag-tags up and running, as well as providing a baseline level of logo coolness with the scrawl of the 18th hole scene.  That's right.

Nate has the clubhouse in Mendo, collects membership cash, hosts poker parties, was the clearinghouse for the logo entrants, and continues to pioneer the use of the super-long-driver as a putter.

Derrick has blazed on the Icebowl, as well as pulling together a viable set of bagtag rules, and having a world-class pastry chef for a girlfriend.

AJ and Vince help rock the Thursday doubles rounds in Fort Bragg, extending the reach of the MFC into foreign lands.

The Linzenator owns the coolest tourney ace on record, as well as one of the best tourney chick rounds ever, and keeps the boys honest.

The Brodys contribute off-the-charts positive energy when they are around, as well as owning the chick record, and being the first to post MFC-related videos on youtube ~and~ produce an MFC sticker.

On top of all that, we all bring in CTPs, and we'll all end up eventually hosting a special tourney.

Usually with things like this, you've got one or two people keeping the thing together, without which everything would disappear.  With our gig, I feel like half the people on this list could leave the country for a year, and they could return with everything intact and grooving along, with meetings having been held, membership having grown, important improvements having been made, etc..  It's like everyone is carrying a piece of this thing, and everyone knows it.  Like an all-star team or something. It's cool shit, is all I'm saying.

Just wanted to testify.

What would YOU want

so i im wondering what would you choose to be your top 3 to get printed for a mendo logo disc??

i think id like
1 good ole dx aviar p&a , very cheap and universal
2 star aviar driver BB? never used one but i want one
3 new fancy star rocs

Montezuma's Revenge

As Yoga Berri once opined- "95% percent of this game is half mental"- Of course he was referring to baseball, but I think all who read this blog on a regular basis will concur- Disc golf is played as much in your head as on the course-
So it was on a cloudy and occasionally brisk Superbowl Sunday morning- yes morning- as 11 brave souls ventured out blinking in AM no less- to allow for some shameless old fashioned American consumption later in the day at on their couches watching the Superbowl.
While your humble author may not speak for the other groups who competed in these less than ideal conditions, our group (myself, Davey "MFing" D, Jeremy "Parking Lot", and Johnny "Football #'s" Quest) started on hole three, and we watched as the wind carried three of our first four drives and deposited them harmlessly away from the basket. We were quickly reminded us that on a day like that day, a kick in par was nothing to be disappointed in.
Despite the images of Vince nailing 50 foot putts every other hole, and a blurry image of Jim calmly knocking down some 25 footers, little was heard from the other groups. In fact, little was heard from our group, and after the first four holes, I felt lucky have hit some nerve racking, wind buffeted par saves to stay even. When my drive on seven was immediately elevatored into another dimension, forcing a rare re-tee, things did not look good for the sun bronzed, rested golfer who hadn't so much as pick up a disc for over three weeks. Calmly my thoughts turned to the ace pool, to the Superbowl, to the ice bowl. As the say in Mexico- "Manana" (and they have that cool key on the keyboard with the squiggly line over the n so you can spell manana correctly)
But on this day, there was no tomorrow, only yesterday, and Parky Brewster started hitting birdies, 6 in all, with more than one legitimate ace run mixed in, to climb back into contention. With the smooth pull of opening a cold tecate on a hot sunny afternoon, he slid a 30 footer in on 15, then got thru the 17/18 gauntlet unscathed (bogey bird combo) and by the time his kick in bird on 2 rattled home he was all alone in 1st place, 3 below his handi.
Only one other player was able to best there handi on this day- Greg- to take second place and secure his third straight tourney in the money (I believe)
The scores (not handied) are below, and I do not dare deface the beauty of the disc with our logo on it above with my ugly mug. See you all next Sunday.

New Logo...!

The votes are in and we have a new MFC logo as voted upon by all club members, (including Matthew). The race was very tight with:

5 votes for #11 (hole 18 through the uprights) Artist: unknown
5 votes for #7 (towering redwoods) Artist: Jen

8 votes for the winning entry#3 (Cypress Chains)
Artist and recipient of the $50 prize: Tamra Whitney

I thought all three finalists were pretty awesome and made for a whatever-wins-is-great outcome. Thanks artists!!

As a club we had agreed a couple weeks back to award $25 to the High School entrant with the most votes. That entry was #12 (smiley headband dude) with 5 votes, very nice job. Also, this entry was very close to making the top three!

Sunday Wrap-Up

So for those waiting on the edge of their seat for news of Sunday, the first and most important nugget: there was no ace. That's right, the ace pot is now teetering on the edge of 3 bills! At this point I think we've got to give serious thought to capping the reward for the next ace, so we have a nice healthy start on the next one. In my opinion, we ought to, at the very least, cap it at $300, if not $250. I would probably vote for $250.

But I digress. There was some very fine golf played, and the rumors were true: some of it, against all odds, was played by Elderberry. Starting on hole 5, he put together a solid birdie-birdie start, but things began to look dim as he became stuck in neutral, parring the next 4 holes in unremarkable fashion. But after a risky throw on the 11th yielded a kick-in birdie, he was back on point, birdieing 12 (snagging AJ's fine Patterson's Pub cap CTP in the process!), 13, 14 and 15 in succession. Missing his birdie try on 16, he then parred 17, and birdied 18, 1, 2, and 3 before closing his round with one of those bounce-out birdie putts where you hit the center of the chains with a gentle throw and still the thing finds a way to kick out (we need a name for those...). Just a reminder that the disc golf gods, and not we, are the ones in charge out there. The final tally was an 11 under, 8 under his handicap, and narrowly edging a fantastic round of 6 under his handi for Greg, who netted a ten-spot for his fine efforts. Special note should also be made of AJ's second CTP, an amorphous anenome-like blob of bright-pink latex, won by Erin on hole 8, and contributed by him to EBerry's very grateful daughter Mae, who began inventing games with the thing immediately upon receipt. Thanks to AJ and Erin on Mae's behalf!

Lastly, four more bag tags were given out Sunday, the excited new recipients being AJ, Vince, Johnny, and Lindsey, who promised she would be out playing again as soon as the time-change allowed her to. Cheers to that, and cheers to all!

Adios, Amigos

Well me and my family are off to the sunny southern sandy stretch of Baja to do...nothing. I will be in heavy training for disc by lifting 16 oz weights all day. Here are last week scores and a handy update. What an exciting time in the club! Bag tags, the logo design contest got 20 more entries, the ice bowl coming up...whew! Hope you all weather the (supposed) storms and I will be back in a couple weeks!

Two Words: Bag Tags

I decided to fergit waiting for our logo and just get us some TAGS, boys.  I found an old-school tag-maker online, and set us up.  The tags have arrived, and they are old-school sweet.  Those who have paid their yearly dues, or who pay them at tourney Sunday, will receive a bag tag with a number commensurate with their handicap ranking among the other members.  Once we get a logo, we can always order new ones if we so wish, but for now, these are killer.

If we have a hurricane with gale-force winds on Sunday, then everything may have to wait until next tourney.  Or not.

Devan Goes Deep for the Mendo Frolfers

It was just an ordinary Thursday afternoon - except for Devan donning a 6/5 surf suit, mask and snorkel, and barreling into the unofficial Little Lake course pond. Many avid frolfers have played around this piece of property, and undoubtedly also lost a disc in the pond. In the name frolfers up and down the coast, Devan took an hour long dive and retrieved just two discs from the slimey, scummey depths. The water was cold (colder than the January ocean, says he) and he used up all our hot water in a post-dive shower trying to recover his fingers and toes.

We thank him for his efforts.

Is that your Destroyer? To find out if your disc was one of two retrieved from the pond, come to Sunday Frolf!

Twenty Ten or 2010 or The First Winner of the New Year!

Well, I have waited for others to post on last weeks tournament (the first tournament of the new year) but I shall take the bull by the horns and report and what a REPORT it is. Erin "Bro Hemulous" "HemHaw" Hemmings broke the tournament record by shooting (holy shit) 15 under par. WOW! A big congratulations to Hemulous. Is that a cartoon version of Erin wearing an Innova shirt and is that a green Firebird? We had a nice turnout of approximately 13 people including some youngsters (and a grandfather) from Booneville. I think Nate Dog was able to get the granddad (I forget his name) to become a member. Give that man a bagtag, a voice, a vote, and a membership to the Mendocino Frolf Club. Vinny Vincenzo Vince took second shooting 4 under his handicap and yours truly DaveyrockingthemendocinocoastextractingteethandshitStein won absolutely nothing by taking 3rd place shooting 3 under my handicap. The day started off sunny and the Mendo fog rolled in to captures discs and swallow hearts. HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone and the ace pot lives on. The following are the scores from tourney day (as I can remember):

Erin: -15 (7 under handicap)
Vince: -2 (4 under handicap
Davey: -8 (3 under handicap)
Jimmer: -3 (even with handicap)
Parks: +4 ( 5 over handicap)
Nate: someone help
Johny: someone help
Jeremy: someone help
Storms: someone help
Youngster 1/Jacob: +16
Youngster 2: +14
Grandad: ??
Am I forgetting someone?

Sorry folks for not having all the scores. Nate Dog--how is the list coming for the benifits of being a member of the Mendocino Frolf Club. Here is how I see it so far:
1. You get a bag tag.
2. You get to vote on things/have a voice (I know an issue some folks are talking about voting on is capping the ace pot and/or starting a new pot).
3. You can attend the meetings.
4. What else?

Here is an update on the logo design contest. I have emailed the Fort Bragg High School art teacher with the details on how to submit applications (I gave her all of Nate's information). I have left a message for the Mendocino High School art teacher but she hasn't called me back. I have emailed some artsy people that I know. I am a little pessimisstic that we are going to get enough submissions. I haven't heard from Arvin Julius in a little while and I am not sure if he has finished the flyer and/or posted them. AJ, where are you? Lithuania? Portugul? Does Kazakhstan have CVS's. Should we extend the deadline (which is currently 1/15)? Give me thoughts and feedback.

Scores 12-27

I don't have time for a worthy tourney summation at the moment but some highlights- Jim (-11). Two pro woman smash the ladies course record and show up the boys. No aces, so the pot goes to $1,722.32.

I never got the scores from the tourney before, btw. Anyone?

South Wind Spooks

Sunday December, 20 2009 saw some mild yet perplexing conditions. When there is a strong south wind at the Mendocino Disc Golf Course a reconsideration of disc choice as well as shot strategy is crucial to a scoring round. This is not newsworthy. For years we've known it. We've shot round after round in wet, south wind conditions. We see gusty winds from the north and score under these conditions. I ask us why is it so hard to compete on a stormy Sunday?

I think I have discerned the answer. There are invisible spirits who live in or around (my investigation has not confirmed where exactly) the course that apparently only show their power during periods of gusty, stormy south winds. Like their counterpart, the Native American Thunderbird, who only arrives on the massive updrafts that accompany strong thunderstorms through middle-america, our spirits fly mostly unseen save the occurrence of just the right conditions. The main difference between the two is that the Thunderbird snatches babies out of cribs for food and our spirits push drives around and create forcefields in the base of the baskets preventing perfectly accurate putts from settling. The Mendocino Disc Golf Course spirits are more like the Gremlins of European lore. Throughout WWII, Gremlins were the cause of countless machinery failures. The Twilight Zone TV series presented a fictional account of one such creature tearing apart the bolts and important parts of an airplane, mid-flight. The Simpsons TV show parodied the scene in which Bart discovered one such creature giving his school bus " the business". The scene played not only on the story of the Gremlin but also incorporated elements of "The Boy Who Cried Wolf". A story whose purpose is to teach us that attracting attention for a pretend emergency will only weaken the reaction to a real one. Players may have been reluctant to share their stories of the Mendocino Disc Golf Course spirits because of the entrenched lessons we have learned through stories like "The Boy Who Cried Wolf".
WOLF!!!
These spirits exist and we should share our stories. By bringing them to light, we marginalize the spirits and take away their power. You see, when we go to bed at night, we enter a "nether zone", or "twilight zone". It is at this time that the spirits thrive and remind us of the deeds they have done during our disc golf rounds. If we share our stories, then the power of the spirits is weakened and thus we can play freely in these stormy conditions.
There must have been a "pow-wow" between Carey, Brady and I before the round. We all managed to weaken the spirit's powers just enough to eek out a -2 handicapped round. Well played gentlemen. I'm sure we could all point out a few chain outs, a few "how the heck did that disc do that?" moments. Up on the top of the world, the three finalists, Carey, Brady and the author of this piece flipped discs and determined the throwing order. Carey missed long, Brady missed long and I missed low. We finished to hole, Brady 4, Me, 4, and Carey 5. Back up we went to the chorus of new rules and ideas for how to finish out. I missed long and Brady laid up in the middle of the field. As is shown by a previous post which lays out the fictional roots of the laying up strategy, I am a proponent of the shot. Apparently the crowd was not. Despite being told that his shot did not count, Brady and I came down and played out our shots. Brady scoring 4 and Myself shooting 5. Brady wins, I got second and Carey earned a well played third place.
The question raised is how do we officially end a tie?
I open this up to discussion.

Congrats Brady and let's end the reign of terror of the Mendocino Disc Golf Course spirits.

New dandy handis-

Here they are goods peoples, updated from the past two weeks. I hope to see you all today. There was some discussion about a meeting after disc today. I could go either way- I do want to meet but I have been preoccupied with other realities lately. (hard to believe disc is not numero uno, eh?) If people want to meet after the round today I am down.
Speaking of, Erin Hemmings Handi is now -9! Shall we consider a special -8 cap on handis for fairness? Just a thought.

Nate Dog Dizzle Dingleberry Anderson

As the title of my blog indicates, Nate Dog the Dingle Dizzle took the cake (and the money) on this day. It was a cold but beautiful day as the sun was shining on 9 brave frolfers. The first group consisted of several chaps trying to find their place in the handicapped system and several veterans. The group was: 1. Jeremy "the Macgyver Tommyhacker", 2. Greg "chainer out of hole 4", 3. Brady "the San Francisco crazy hat wearer", and veterans 4. Tommy "I got discs for sale" Snyder, and yours truly 5. King David. The second group consisted of: 1. Winner (Nate), 2. Smelderberry/Flames Helldrigde, 3. Bro Hemulous/HemHaw, and 4. Johny Be Good.

The scores were as follows:

Erin: -12 (Second place shooting 3 or 4 under his handicap)
Davey: -7
Brady: -6
Johny: -4
Jimmy: -2
Tommy: -2
Jeremy: -1
NATE: Even (Winner shooting 5 or 6 under his handicap).
Greg: +6

All and all it was a fun day and the ACE POT lives on. The total of the pot is $221.31.

P.S. Can someone post a picture of The Nate Dog?

Keep on Truckin'

Wow guys- what a becoming picture of me. My favorite hole too! I look like that "keep on truckin'" cartoon from the 60's. Who was that? The name is on the tip of my toungue- freaky freddie...umm..no...Robert Crumb! (I cheated on that one.) Anyway I doubt I will be able to defend my crown today, as I have come down with the swine/bird/turkey flu and should be mellow. Here is last weeks scores however, which I believe is the new MFC record for the three sorriest and rag tag score cards ever to be submitted. In terms of condition, not scores that is. Good thing I had a Costco pack of scotch tape. I shall now set my mucus clogged head to update our handicaps. Now, people, be kind, and let that Ace pool ride one more week!

November 8th 2009

And for those of you who cant see that great shot of the score cards it reads like this. We had some new blood this week, love seeing new faces. We had Seth come out and shot a +22, watch out that is how Alex started out. Then we had Terry shooting a +17. Steve shot a +12 for his first MFC score. Cary shot a great game at +4 only to be shown up by his son Dillon "a boy named Sue" +3. Jody and I joined the newby group and Jody shot a +8 and I shot a -6.

So on to the oldies but goodies. Rusty had a +7. Tim the Booneville boogie man shot a +9. Vince "Indy Jones" Koski recorded a +5. RyeBread finished with a E. Jim was -4.

On to the folks who started on 10. Nate shot a +11. Travelin' Matt shot a +5. Roy shot a +1. The return of Brian Storm was a +6 and a warm welcome home. This group also contained the tie for second witch was between Davey and Erin. Davey shot -9 and Erin shot -10, great rounds guys. There was a play off from the top of the world and Davey took home the money.

I hope this is the start of my threepete. See you all next week.

The Brand Nubians or The Newby Brothers or What a Beautiful Day in Mendo

Well Frolfland, I must report that 2 semi-new (new at least to the Mendocino Frolf Club tournaments) frolfers are taking the coast by storm. Alex "Alexander Supertramp" and "Uncle Traveling Wilbury" Matt have came to play and came to stay (well actually I heard that Super-T is leaving soon). Anyways, Alexander Supertramp took first place by shooting something like 8 under his handicap and the Wilbury shot an impressive 3 under (7 under his handicap). I guess it helps to shoot 22 over and then play everyday and shoot 8 under your handicap...huh Alex? Erin "HemHaw" Hemmings shot an impressive 12 under (6 under his handicap) and walked away empty handed. Props to HemHaw...nice round. Anyways, fun tournament and the ace pot lives! Can anyone put up a picture of SuperT and/or Traveling Matt or both? Can someone put a picture of the score cards?

Lets take a vote about Fort Bragg Thursday Night Doubles...how wants to start at 5pm and who wants to start ot 6pm? I vote for starting at 5pm. Who is playing this thursday and what time do people want to play?

Halloween Scream

Saturday October 31, 2009 saw a grouping of four on the links at the Joey Memorial Frolf Course. At around 2PM Davey, AJ, Matthew and Myself joined up for the first real stroke play match on the before said frolf course. Without all the drama I will announce that a new record has been posted and the challenge to beat it is being heralded.
An early debate of the rules was settled and it was decided that no drivers and no thumbers were the only restrictions.
It was a see-saw battle that saw each player, for a portion of time, as the leader. Davey made an early play but some crucial missed putts late in the round prevented his normal dominant position at the end. Matthew showed what is becoming his signature style. Hitting nearly unfathomable putts. After three parked drives on #4 (no small task considering the left to right nature of the hole and the OB) Matthew drained a 50 footer to make a full birdie set. Strong play kept him in the game and hit the -5 that could have been much better if not for some short misses. I knew going into this thing that I was the favorite. Not only because of my rustic good looks but because I designed the course and shot probably a 100 rounds here. I actually thought I was going to bring down the record going into #15 (it's a 15 hole course). A double bogey later and I ended up in last place with a -3. Not very impressive. The championship grade game played today was thrown by non other that AJ. Who knew that the guy who buries 30 ft. putts at will and manhandles mid-rangers like they are little kittens would be able to dominate a par 3 pitch and putt. AJ never let up and hole by hole racked up the birdies, passed Davey and Matthew, passed me and then shot a hole #15 birdie to win the match and claim the record of -7.
AJ, let us know what you're drinkin' my man.
The course could hold a better score than that and I challenge us all to break it. We are looking at Christmas for the departure of this property, so in the meantime, let us play. I will try to schedule regular rounds out here, but I would love to rally up for anyone who wants to play.
Aloha

All Hallows Heave- New Time, Same Place

Howdy Frolfland-

Hope you all had a wonderful Halloween. I have spoken with about 5 fellow frolfing friends and a partridge in a pear tree. We all agreed to start today at 2:30 on account of the time change. So actually we are starting at the same exact time but we will all change our time pieces and call it something different. I am excited about the new super blog powers Erin has bequethed to us. I will attempt to attach handis, post silly photos and cast level one fireball spells. By the way what does "monetize" mean? Sounds like a pyramid scheme. Well I have already failed in my attempt to attach the Handis. I will now email them- please let me know if you wish to be added to the email list, btw.

A Great Day of Frolf and Some New Blood Action

A 13 player turnout and a first time champion garnished sunday's frolf feast. With a gusty 15-20 kt. north-northwesterly breeze and sunny skies, the Mendocino High School Disc Golf Course was at its peak in terms of conditions. The course would be challenging and unpredictable. The wind would play its role in creating the drama of a good sunday tourny. Without the intermittent exhale of ol' Neptune the course can sometimes seem open and even easy to score on. The wind blew and the discs followed.
Our new champion and new disc golf enthusiast, Matthew McAllister, shot an even with three birdies and a 5-4 finish on 17 and 18. Impressive. Especially to know that Uncle Travelin' Matt only just started playing the game last year and has only a handful of rounds in Mendo. Good risk/reward strategy and cautious play earned the newcomer a handicapped -5 and a tourny win. Second place saw the crafty veteren Erin "these pants are too long I need to" Hem"them"ings against a spry and dressed to impress Alex "I came to play today". With a long left to right shot, Erin crossed the plane of the uprights and left a difficult birdie putt, while our hero, Davey to Erin's Goliath, missed short left but played hard and brought the game to a forty-fifty foot putt that made a good run. Erin second, Matt the gold and Alex with a strong sunday finish.
For me and what seemed like the rest of us it was a good challenge. A round of applause for the host of last week, I could not make it but it sounds like a swell adventure, mister Derrick Robbings. With a new handi of -4 I do believe he is now the real thing. Congrats. I only saw the game of those on my card. Well played Jake with a hadicapped 0 and Zeb who never gave up and had some very good control for a brand new player. Aloha to Drew for hanging in there and shooting a 5 on his first ever Mendo round in the wind. Cautious play and big par hits were the keys to that magic trick. I shot a +1 and turns out had a -1 handi so I had a tough day.
Always nice to see everyone out and about on a beautiful sunday.

Sarah and I may be moving out of our house soon. This would mean an end to the Joey Memorial. I would love to have some folks out for stroke play matches to see how far we can push the score on this thing. Maybe Saturday all day play.
I'll send out an invite if it all works out.

Milk Duds and A Big Thank You To Dirka!

Mendocino Frolf Club Patrons,

It was a fun Manchester weekend (wait, was that only one day?) with lots of food, fun, and frolicness but what did we really learn:

1. DaveyD likes Milk Duds.
2. Dirka/Dekendra puts on a great special tournament with Pinata and everything.
3. Parksadisc likes the Manchester course but isn't very good at setting "over under ace lines".
4. HemHaw is a good disc golfer (even on a course where he doesn't have to throw a thousand feet).
5. B-Run shows up for fun events.
6. Smelderberry likes Coors and Coors Light (thanks for the beer, Smelder!)
7. Brian Brody is a kind gentlemen letting Oroville take home at least one medal.
8. Jody Brody is not a kind woman and she took it to the field (Nice second place Jody!)
9. Despite Arvin Julius having to open a CVS in Azerbaijan he was still able to make the tournament and bring home a medal.
10. Alexander Supertramp got an ace and shot 100 down (WTF!)
11. Vince is really a queenie Indiana Jones.
12. Those silly Oroville guys sure know how to party and karoke.
13. Chimichangas covered in chilli make DaveyD have to make big doodies.

Hey, another big thank you and Kudus to Dirka for arranging the Special Tournament. Great idea with the Pinata stuffed with Milk Duds and Alcohol.

I can Moderate. Well not really just on here.

This weekend proved that even when you are facing your lowest handi and the heaviest wind anything can happen. We started out in two groups. Erin, Rye Bread, Traveling Matt and myself started things off. I was happy with my start to the day hitting the bush right behind the pin for one. Others in this group were not treated so fairly by the wind. I think we were finishing hole two when we heard the crowd erupt with cheers. The second group made of Nate, Jody, Davey, Parkweather, and Super T Alex were alive with the banging of the chains from 150 feet away. Who did it? OH! There goes Jody running to the basket with a smile that could be seen from space. At that moment we should have handed Jody the money and went to see what ever football game or Simpsons episode that we were missing. Had we admitted defeat then things may not have stung so much for everyone else. I did not hear many great stories of the day except Super T and Traveling both posted some killer windy day scores. Great job guys. I had a high note of tying Hem Haw on the front nine. Come to find Jody was only one stroke behind us at the turn with her all time low of -3 at hole 10. I felt really good about my game until 16 where I went from -5 to +2 in 3 holes. My silly last few holes saw me out of the running for first and into a tie for second with The Bread Man. Jody ended her victory at +4 with her handy gave here the win at -1. Congrats Jody, but watch out for falling handis. Ryan and I decided that we could not take much more of the excitement and wanted to settle this quick and easy. So we played the money hole and Ryan slammed one into the chains to take the win! Great shot Ryan! Hope to see you all next week.

ROY

Upon request (from Smelder) and because Roy deserves it, dagnabit, I shall announce to the webernet world that our own Roy won last Sunday's tournament playing a stellar game and winning the tournament in a playoff. My group consisted of myself, Alex "Alexander Supertramp", Nate "Nate Dog Dizzle" Anderson, and Vince "Vinny Vincenzo". This was a fierce battle between Nate, Roy, and Vince and Vince and Roy tied shooting (I think) 4 under their handicap. "Top of the World" someone screamed out and without further adeu - Roy and Vince were at the top of the world both throwing threw the uprights and hitting their putts. That's right they BOTH threw it through the uprights (great shots guys). Anyways, so they went to a second hole playoff where Roy took it. Great game guys. Hope to see y'all today.

Mend Disc Golf and a New World Record (sort of)

Gents and Ladies,

A new Mendocino Disc Golf record is upon us. Jim Jimmy Jimmerson Eldestberry Eldridge and I went out yesterday seeking the "One Disc Only" record. James used his new (sort of Periwinkle) Destroyer and I used my outstanding yeller Force. The match was close (very close), despite Davey D having approximately 4 Tecata Beers in him. We ended with a tie both shooting 7 under. There were many putts that squirreled out but some that surprisingly stayed in. Well, write it up, document it...there is a new MFC record out there. We (Jim, I hope I can speak for you) are accepting all challengers.

Hey Erin, thanks for putting the cool new picture on the website but does anyone notice a spelling error?

Anyways, (to repeat Dirka Dekendra) who is in for the Manchester regular tournament and Dirka's special tournament?

GO DETROIT LIONS! (Sorry about those Golden Bears of Berkeley)

Results from Sunday, Goddess Games, and More

So, I find it necessary to report that Erin HemHam E.F. Hutton Hemmings won last Sundays tournament shooting an impressive 9 under (2 under his handicap) despite a very wet, windy (mostly South), and utterly miserable day. Matthew shitweather Parksadisc came in second shooting an even round (even after handicap).

I would love to get a report from the Goddess Games...Brodys, can you help a Frolfer out?

Who is playing Fort Breezy doubles tomorrow? The time is 5pm these days. I got a call from Arvin "the dragon riding" Julius who reported that he has put several calls out and we might get a nice turnout so come one come all.

Mendo Out!
